Shang Palace 香宮 – An Elegant Eatery

Heading to a Michelin two-star restaurant, the luxuriously decorated interior is fully inspired by the Chinese with a feast of oriental glamour. The antique setting, also meaning an artsy combination of red and golden yellow color, has indeed transported us back to the Imperial China. Unlike Angelini, the Italian restaurant, Shang Palace is located at the basement of Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel. While traditional Cantonese cuisines is offered here, dim sum is only served during the afternoon.

A fancy dim sum platter is specially prepared in celebration of their 34th Anniversary. That includes a scallop dumpling with yellow wrapper, shao mai, shrimp dumpling and vegetarian dumpling which are all equally delicate and delicious.

The signature abalone puff is made with a well-baked buttery crust and chicken filling.

Pineapple baked buns are very lovely looking, having criss-cross crust, fluffy bun stuffed with sweet honey glazed char siu pork.

Moving on to the a la carte, the braised pork ribs does not show an expected tenderness and yet still retain succulent, along with a vinegar sauce that could have been made sweeter.

A highly recommended dish at Shang Palace is the stuffed crab shell. It is a generous portion of crab meat and onion shreds coated within a crispy golden breadcrumb. The black vinegar is also optional to make it more stands out.  We also end our meal delightfully with chilled pumpkin cream, scoop of coconut ice cream and a spoonful of purple glutinous rice.

After all, this elegant eatery does deserve a special mention in Hong Kong.
