Peking Garden 北京樓 – A Noble Peking Duck

Peking Garden is one of those typical looking Chinese restaurants ran by the Maxims group. The elegant, sophisticated decor gives a pretty cosy and intimate ambience, which makes it a great place for family dining.

Starting off with a few classic Shanghainese cold appetizers. The shredded chicken with vermicelli has been dressed decently with toasty sesame paste. The vegetarian bean curd rolls have a touch of sweet note filled with black fungus and carrot strips. The super thinly sliced tofu is a pretty light dish that shows an excellent knife skill from the Chef.

Instead of the typical sweet and sour fish, we had some flaky cod fillets braised in soy sauce. A pan fried bean curd is also tastefully done with shrimp roes.

Of course, the signature dish is their coffee-brown roasted Peking duck, well carved to serve with steaming hot floury pancakes and Hoisin sauce. Another excellent dish is the batter fried jumbo shrimp cooked with delicious and addicting salted egg yolk. The Jin Hua Ham is then served individually inside a flat slider bun, along with some honey syrup and lotus seeds. While the string beans are never my kind of thing, the xiao long bao is soupy enough despite its deflated look.

We also ordered longevity buns that are unlikely to come with red bean filling; and caramelized bananas dipped in cream soda to form a layer of hardened sugar, which is another must have in my opinion.
