Uji is a place for matcha. By JR line 8,9 or 10, it only takes 5 or 6 stations ahead from Kyoto station to this famous local cafe – Nakamura Tokichi the main store. For over 200 history, they have been serving meals of savory soba and sweet treats, provided that no booking in advance and only walk in available.
Arriving at 10:50, Tokichi in fact opens at 11, but that is already the 24th on the waiting list.
After the first crowd being settled, we are seated at a cushion corner with colourful table cloths and hot tea served. The meals are quickly served, for the first lunch set, a bowl of buckwheat matcha soba topped with mackerel fish sweet glaze. Together is a mini portion tea jelly that is similar to the bigger portion, which is differently served inside an exclusive wooden container to keep temperature cold.
The most fascinating dish is surely the warabimochi as it is served limited daily. Choosing between soybean or matcha powder and with or without kuromitsu syrup, the chewiness and roasted sweet flavor is unbeatably a heaven on earth.
While a less aesthetic red bean soup is served piping hot, the two rice cakes are still large, thick and perfect glutinous texture which no one would ever judge about.
Truth to be told, it i is very worth to pay an hour visit for an authentic matcha experience at Nakamura Tokichi Honten, the Main Store.
